Workshops – Thursday 26th Sept 2024

Choose workshop option for year level.

Choose 1 workshop per child per day.  One workshop lasts for 4 hours – 2 hours then lunch and 2 hours to finish at 2.30pm.

If the workshop choice has a levy indicated then you choose the workshop ticket at member or non-member price first and then also the levy ticket for the workshop selected.  You can also choose a workshop for the second day + any levy if required.

Workshop duration is from 9.30 – 11.30 (11.30-12.15 supervised lunch break – Children bring own lunch) 12.15 – 2.15pm

You also need to download and complete the Consent and Medical Form and email to office@qagtc.org.au to finalise registration.

Workshop duration is from 9.30 – 11.30 (11.30-12.15 supervised lunch break – Children bring own lunch) 12.15 – 2.15pm

Registration and Sign-in

Our Lady’s College is located at 15 Chester Road, Annerley

Registration is from 8.30 am to 9.10 am outside the Library, access from Chester Road.

Parents are invited to attend a parent information session offered by the QAGTC President in the library on the day.

After registration, outside the Library, student/s to go to assembly area and if parents are staying for the Information Session please proceed to verandah area behind the library, on the deck overlooking the oval; have a coffee and wait for session commencement at 9.30 am.

For teacher and student safety, parents are asked not to go to assembly area, or into workshop classrooms please. Drop off and pick up is from the registration area outside the library.

Note if any parent or child is unwell, with respect to others, then please do not attend this event.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It: Dare to Write About a Moment in Time!

You are going to choose an extraordinary moment in your life that you remember well and Dare to Write About It for a Press Release. This may include any event, any celebration e.g. birthday, cultural festival, Christmas, victory, sporting achievement, family, holiday etc. Think about this event
* Who was involved?
* What happened?
* How did you feel about this experience?
Experience this extraordinary opportunity of your life and engage in retelling your moment in time by developing your talented writing skills.

This is a one-day workshop and will be on Thursday 26th September

Requirements:

  • Gifted writers please bring along a memory in your life that is so special and significant to you. This may be a photo, illustration, sketching, drawing, conversation, an object you have, a newspaper clipping.
  • You need to bring writing materials (notebook, writing pencils, colouring pencils, dictionary)

The Mathematics of Triangles

Do you love Mathematics? If you would you like to learn about some amazing and useful features of triangles, come along to our intensive workshop where we will explore the magic of triangles even when they are inside circles. Even though this will be Year 6-8 level mathematical thinking, we will gradually stretch our minds to be able to use triangle facts for measuring and constructing in the real world (outside the classroom).

This one-day workshop will be on Thursday 26th  September

Requirements:

  • Please bring pencils, erasers, ruler, protractor and notebook.

Holo-Wand Robotics

Step into the future with this one-day workshop, where students will create and keep their very own “Holo-wand”! In this exciting class, participants will learn to solder electronic components and program a microcontroller to display secret messages as dazzling holographic effects that appear in the air as the wand is quickly waved back and forth. As they craft their Holo-wands, they’ll explore the science behind Persistence of Vision (POV) and discover how our eyes and brain work together to create these stunning illusions. They’ll also get hands-on experience with the math behind binary and hexadecimal systems, which they will need to use to create the messages displayed on their wand. Best of all, each participant will take home their custom-built Holo-wand!

Student Levy of $15 payable with registration for this workshop.

This one-day workshop will be on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th September (choose 1 day either Thursday or Friday)

Requirements:

  • Students are encouraged to bring a phone or tablet with a scientific calculator app installed. (Apple or Android). Some spare tablets will be available, and students will be encouraged to share as well.

Josie Minze

Voice Your View: A Crash Course in Debating

Having won the highest scoring speaker in the Ipswich Secondary Schools Debating Competition for three years in a row, debater and adjudicator Josie Minz is excited to share her debating tips, tricks, and games with other curious minds. Using current stimulus, students will collaborate to explore real-world situations and then form and argue their own opinion. The debating forum will begin with a quick crash course in debating skills and techniques and some small, fun games. A grand final debate will then allow students to showcase the skills they have learnt throughout the day and get a taste of a real debating competition.

This one-day workshop will be on Thursday 26th September only

Requirements:

  • Students will be required to bring a pen and workbook, as well as a laptop, or other device for research.

Resumption of Workshops

Children return to workshop location and wait outside for teacher to allow entry to room.

Students not to enter room without teacher present.

Workshops continue for the afternoon session.
